Britt Hunt || President, Interpreter
A native of Columbia, SC , Britt Hunt attended Clemson University where he earned a BA in Spanish and International Trade. After living for several years in Latin America, Britt returned to Miami to complete his Masters in Latin American and Caribbean Studies at Florida International University. He came home to South Carolina to found Comunicar in 2002. He is a Nationally Certified Health Care Interpreter as well as a State Certified Judicial Interpreter. He is also a member of the National Association of Judicial Interpreters and Translators (NAJIT).
Andres was born in Tulsa, OK to Colombian parents. After moving around on numerous occasions, his family settled down in Greenville, SC. Andres earned his BA in History with a minor in Latin American Studies (2009). In the Fall of 2012, he will begin coursework towards an MA in Spanish at the same institution. He would like to be a History or Latin American Studies professor when he finally completes his studies. He has been interpreting since January 2007 and enjoys it very much.
Sonja is originally from Charlotte, NC. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology, with a concentration in Linguistics, from the University of South Carolina. Her first language is English, and her Spanish-language background includes much schooling and a 4-month research and study experience in Santiago, Chile at the Universidad Andrés Bello, where she researched the roots and influences of the indigenous cultures and languages on the modern dialect of Chilean Spanish. Her previous interpreting experience includes working with the HABLA program at USC, an interpreting and translating service provided to the S.C. Department of Social Services. Overall, she loves interpreting and enjoys what she does.
A South Carolina native, Julie received her BA at Francis Marion University. She is truly a jack-of-all-trades, with ties to multiple industries around the state. Julie has been with Comunicar for five years, keeping the place running like a well-oiled machine. She is the glue that holds the business together.
Born into an immigrant family in Chicago, Illinois, Laura was raised and educated in Mexico, where she completed one year of medical school. She earned BS (1991), MA (1994) and Ph.D. (2002) degrees from Michigan State University, in anthropology, with emphasis in Biological Anthropology. She received a National Science Minority Postdoctoral Fellowship for biogeochemical analysis of bone proteins at the University of Notre Dame, in South Bend, IN (2001-2002). She earned the Certificate of Interpretation (2010) from the College of Charleston and completed the certification for Court Interpreting in North Carolina (2011). An active member of NAJIT, she is passionate about interpreter training and the promotion of language access to justice and safe, culturally competent health care. She serves on the SC Access to Justice LEP Task Force.
Kyle Criminger || Interpreter
Kyle is originally from Lancaster, South Carolina and studied Spanish in Ecuador, where he taught EFL classes for 3 years. He has been a medical interpreter for Comunicar since March, 2008 and is working towards CCHI certification.
Alfonso Franco || Interpreter
Isabel Garcia || Interpreter
Isabel was born in Valencia, Venezuela and moved to the United States when she was 16 years old. She has lived in South Carolina ever since. She has a bachelors degree in psycology with a minor in Spanish and is also working to obtain a masters degree in special Education. Before joining Comunicar she worked at USC Ophthalmology clinic. She is very happy with the opportunity to interpret and help the Spanish community. She is also looking forward to get her national certification as a health interpreter.
Born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia Laura has a BA in Spanish and a minor in Speech Pathology from the University on Northern Colorado. She has also done research in the process of secondary language acquisition. Laura has a total experience of 5 years as a Spanish interpreter, and is currently on her way to acquiring her nursing degree where she will be able to further the use of her Spanish skills to help her patients.
Rafael was born in Caracas, Venezuela and moved to the U.S when he was 14 years old where he lived in Charleston, SC. He has been interpreting since 2003 and enjoys it because it gives him the satisfaction of helping others. Rafael just received national healthcare interpreter certification. He is also attending school for Radiologic Technology.
Irma G. Santana || Interpreter
Irma was born and raised in El Salvador, Central America. She attended the University of South Carolina for three years and has been working for Comunicar for the past 8 years. Irma is now working towards CCHI certification.
Christa is currently a student at the University of South Carolina where she is studying Art Education and Spanish. She has spent several summers working in Honduras most recently teaching kinder in a rural school. She volunteers for several Hispanic organizations, and hopes to use her growing language skills to help breach language barriers in her teaching. At Comunicar she is in charge of the website among various other small tasks, so if there are any inconsistencies or formatting issues they are solely her fault.
